BluesEd Program Materials
Student Code of Conduct and Parent Responsibilities
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT:
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT:
- I understand that when I am performing with my band, I am representing the BluesEd program and should behave in a way that will portray the program in a positive light. Specifically, I will refrain from inappropriate language, dress, and behavior.
- I will respect all facilities and equipment and will leave any facility (including venues, rehearsal spaces, homes) in the same or better condition than I found it.
- I will learn how to chart music.
- I will practice on my own.
- I will attend rehearsals and workshops fully prepared with charted music and individual parts learned.
- I will respect the clinicians and their authority at every workshop. I understand that any clinician is authorized to expel a student from a workshop at his or her discretion.
- I will attend all rehearsals, workshops and performances. If I must be absent, I will notify my Lead Parent/Performance Coordinator by text or email in advance, as soon as I am aware of the conflict. Any absence with less than 24-hour notice, unless due to illness or other emergency, shall be considered unexcused.
- If I have an absence from a rehearsal or workshop, it is my responsibility to learn the material and prepare for performances.
- I understand my band expects me to keep commitments. Should I need to break a commitment for a workshop or performance, I understand I must find a stand-in for my instrument from within the BluesEd program with enough advance notice for that stand-in to have rehearsal opportunities with my band before the performance or workshop.
- I will respect event coordinators, stage-hands, sound engineers and anyone else in authority at performance venues.
- I will respect my Lead Parent, Performance Coordinator, band members and all students and families in BluesEd.
- I understand that band members may or may not be best friends, but that we must all treat each other with respect.
- I understand that ALL conversations with my bandmates are expected to be professional and courteous. This includes all face-to-face conversations, texting and all forms of social media posting.
- I understand that I am not authorized to exclude [or suggest to exclude] band members from practices, clinics, workshops, or performances.
- I understand that I have the right to inform my Lead Parent or Performance Coordinator of any issue or concern I may have about individuals or overall progress of my band.
- I will mark all my equipment with my name and ensure that all equipment taken to a rehearsal/workshop/gig is taken back home.
- I understand I may have to share my equipment (drum set, amplifier, and keyboard) at BluesEd events.
- I understand I can be expelled from BluesEd if I break this code of conduct.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
- I will ensure my child practices and upholds the Student’s Code of Conduct.
- I will ensure my child attends rehearsals and workshops and arrives on time.
- I will ensure my child keeps commitments to the dates and gigs he or she confirms with the band.
- I will ensure my child has all necessary equipment required to succeed in BluesEd.
- I will respond quickly to all BluesEd communication from Lead Parents and Directors.
- I understand that Lead Parents, Performance Coordinators and Directors are volunteers and will respect their time and leadership.
- I will not interrupt Clinicians during workshops or the Performance Coordinator during rehearsals.
- If I have concerns at a venue, such as sound level, I will discuss my concerns with the Lead Parent or Performance Coordinator. I understand that only the Lead Parent or Performance Coordinator will address concerns with the sound engineer or venue.
- I understand that I am solely responsible for my child and that it is my duty to supervise my child at all BluesEd venues. I agree to follow all laws regarding minors in venues that serve alcohol.
- I understand that I am not authorized to exclude [or suggest to exclude] band members from rehearsals, clinics, workshops, or performances.
- Keeping in mind that all students want to play in front of a crowd, when possible, I will attend entire performances so that I may support all performing bands and not just my child’s band.
- I will volunteer. If I cannot fulfill a volunteer shift, I will ensure that I find a substitute or swap with another BluesEd parent. I will encourage my child to assist me when I volunteer.
BluesEd Disciplinary Policies
The Directors may determine that it is necessary to exclude or remove a participant from a workshop, clinic, performance or the entire BluesEd program. This may occur if a clinician, student, or parent requests disciplinary action and is investigated. The decision to remove a student from a workshop, group, or the BluesEd program will be made only after the directors have discussed the concerns with the student(s) in question and their parents. Students will receive a warning before they are dismissed from a workshop, group, or permanently from the program. (Except for actions listed under “Immediate Expulsion”) An expulsion may occur only after the infraction has been reported in a timely manner to the Directors, and they have had an opportunity to investigate the facts, give the participant/parent notice regarding the reason for the expulsion/removal, and provide the participant or parent(s) the opportunity to respond and address the issue or concern.
Removal from a Workshop: This may occur if the participant/parent is behaving in a manner that is distracting, disruptive or disrespectful to the clinicians, directors or any other student or parent in the workshop. This is necessary to preserve the rights of other participants to enjoy and meet the workshop goals. This may occur if a clinician, student, or parent requests disciplinary action for continuing non-compliance to any of the workshop etiquette rules, a disrespectful attitude toward the clinician, directors, or other students/parents, mistreatment or misuse of any of the studio space, studio equipment and furnishings, or other students’ music equipment or instruments. Any clinician is authorized to expel a student from a workshop or clinic at his/her discretion.
Exclusion from a performance: An exclusion from a performance opportunity may occur if the participant/parent has failed to observe and respect the performance etiquette guidelines, or has missed workshops or rehearsals that would affect the performance of the rest of the group. A student may be excluded from a performance following the second unexcused workshop absence. Only the Directors are authorized to exclude a student from a performance.
Removal from the BluesEd program: This may occur if the participant is unprepared for workshops on a regular basis, if the participant is not willing to keep up with their group’s musical progress and growth, if a student/parent is thought to be a negative and disruptive influence in the program and its members, or if the student OR parent is making it difficult for the workshops, performances, or the program to progress in a positive manner. The student will receive one formal warning prior to being removed from the program. Only the Directors are authorized to remove a student from the BluesEd program.
Immediate expulsion from the BluesEd program: This will occur for acts including: threats, striking or hitting another participant, clinician, director, or parent; sexual contact or harassment; drug use, possession or distribution during a BluesEd workshop, performance, private practice, or any other BluesEd event; violation against public decency and good morals; violations or property theft against BluesEd or any BluesEd sponsor, violation of the law, or any other actions that are considered to be destructive or disruptive.
The above policies are not considered to be all-inclusive; the Directors on a case-by-case basis will address disciplinary actions. Any breach of the above policies must be reported to the Directors immediately.
